How do doctors find out if acne is due to hormonal imbalance? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

Hello Siti,

Hormonal acne usually affects the lower 1/3 of the face (jawline/ chin) and it can be related to menses.

From what you have described (increased facial hair and irregular periods), you may want to see a gynaecologist to rule out a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) first and it can have other health implications.

Hormonal acne can be treated with the usual medications and antiandrogens

Topicals:

  • Retinoids
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid

Orals:

  • **Oral Contraceptive Pills
    **
  • Spironolactone
  • Antibiotics
  • Isotretinoin

Speak to a trusted doctor to find out more.

Regards,

Dr Jiwei Wu
