Hi, the red scars of yours are Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE).
What is Post Inflammatory Erythema (PIE)?
Red acne marks / scars otherwise known as post inflammatory erythema (PIE) can be stubborn and often a source of frustration. Even with no treatment, PIE marks eventually fade. However, the process is slow and can take several months to a year.
What causes PIE?
PIE develops due to damage and dilation of small blood vessels (capillaries) near the surface of the skin.
It is commonly caused by
• Inflamed acne
• Incorrectly “popping” or picking of pimples
• Trauma to the skin such as scraps or scratches
• Chemical / laser burns
• Sunburn
Simple test for PIE
Apply pressure to the red marks and if they temporarily disappear, it is most likely PIE.
How can we treat PIE?
Vascular lasers (e.g Pro-yellow laser, Spectra “Gold-Toning” 595nm laser, Pulse dye laser) can effectively treat PIE by targeting hemoglobin through the process of selective photothermolysis. They safely penetrate skin to break down and disperse damaged blood vessels, thereby reducing the appearance of PIE.
Aside from lasers, look for these ingredients in your skincare products as they have been described to improved PIE.
• Niacinamide
• Vitamin A
• Peptides
• Green tea extracts
• Vitamin C and Vitamin E
I hope this is useful!
