Colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure to study the internal lining of our large intestine. It is also the investigation of choice for colon cancer screening and surveillance.

Before agreeing to a colonoscopy, you should find out the indication, risks, and benefits from your digestive specialist. Do remember to provide him or her your medical history as the medicine you are actively taking.

Colonoscopy starts with bowel preparation which may come in the form of fluid ingestion or fluid administered into the rectum or a combination of both the day before your procedure. Your doctor may also prescribe you some tablets to enhance the bowel cleansing effect. This step is important to ensure a complete and thorough inspection of your colon.

The procedure itself takes approximately 30 min to complete. Your doctor will explain to you the gross findings at the end of the procedure. Any tissue sample taken may take a couple of days for proper histological interpretation. Please remember to return to your doctor for a review after colonoscopy.
