How is colon ulcer treated?

Doctor's Answer

Ulcers in the colon do not usually cause any discomfort or pain. The commonest cause is inflammation caused by food sensitivity or infection (which can be viral or bacterial). Less common causes include inflammatory bowel disease or autoimmune diseases affecting the colon.

Colon ulcers are not diagnosed clinically as they don't have symptoms. The diagnosis is made by direct visualization during colonoscopy. Speak to your endoscopist about your ulcers. Treatment is based on the diagnosis. If the diagnosis is unclear, probiotics can sometimes help is you have loose stools or abdominal bloating.
