How is my stress level linked to nausea?

Doctor's Answer

First, let me talk about the concept of ‘brain-gut connection’. It is now realised that there is a powerful connection between the gut and the brain. People talk about ‘gut feelings’; it is true, like the brain, the gut is full of nerves. It contains the largest area of nerves outside the brain.

Second, anxiety and stress can affect virtually every body system. This includes our:

  • cardiovascular,
  • endocrine,
  • musculoskeletal,
  • nervous,
  • reproductive,
  • respiratory systems.

In the digestive system, stress can cause the following symptoms and conditions:

  1. nausea,
  2. vomiting,
  3. heartburn,
  4. acid reflux,
  5. stomachache,
  6. gas,
  7. bloating,
  8. indigestion; diarrhoea,
  9. constipation,
  10. painful spasms in the bowel,
  11. loss of appetite,
  12. unnatural hunger,
  13. peptic ulcers,
  14. irritable bowel syndrome.

Third, when a person is anxious, the brain releases chemicals called neurotransmitters, which put the body into a high state of alert. This process prepares the body for "fight or flight" in response to a perceived threat. Some of the neurotransmitters enter the digestive tract where they can upset the gut microbiome — the delicate balance of microorganisms that live inside the gut. Imbalances in the gut microbiome can result in nausea.

Fourth, some of the hormones and chemicals released by the body enter the digestive tract, where they interfere with digestion. They have a negative effect on gut flora and decrease antibody production. The resulting chemical imbalance can cause a variety of gastrointestinal conditions.

When a person feels nauseated, the following may help:

  1. Try to sip water slowly.
  2. If he or she is wearing something tight, it will help to change into clothing that does not restrict the stomach.
  3. Try to calm oneself down by taking long, deep breaths.

It will be good to avoid the following when feeling nauseated. Avoid foods that are:

  • Fried,
  • Too greasy,
  • Too sweet.

You are encouraged to not mix hot and cold together. And lastly, avoid intense physical activity until one feels better.
