The following are common situations where a patient may opt to have the fungus-infected nail removed as the preferred treatment:
1. Only a single nail is severely affected to avoid prolonged use of oral antifungal medication or topical treatment just to treat a single diseased nail.
2. When medical treatment has been tried and failed.
3. When medical treatment is not likely to work. There are different types of fungus that may affect the nail. Some are resistant to current medical treatment available e.g. molds. A fungal culture is required to first identify the exact species of fungus affecting the nail so that the likelihood of medical treatment working may be predicted.
