How effective is fucidin for acne?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

The bacterium that is responsible for causing inflammatory acne is Cutibacterium acnes. To treat this bacterium topically, erythromycin and clindamycin are usually used. Combining these medications with topical benzoyl peroxide helps reduce the occurrence of antibiotic resistance when using topical antibiotics to treat acne.

Topical fucidic acid (Fucidin) is used to treat minor skin infections and boils caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. It should not be used to treat inflammatory acne.
