Is it safe to go for an MRI if I have a dental implant?

Doctor's Answer

Yes. It’s definitely safe. It doesn’t affect the MRI. But if you have a lot of dental implants, what can happen is that your MRI can actually come out with a lot of scattering.

Maybe if let’s say you have like 12 implants, your MRI will look really bright because these titanium implants are really opaque and they come out white. But as long as your doctor knows that you have dental implants, those can be factored in when they are looking at it.

It’s definitely not dangerous. The MRI is not going to pull your implants out of your mouth, it’s not going to cause an explosion, no. It’s very safe. It may affect the readings but we can calibrate the machine to still see it properly.
