How can I tell what kind of acne I have? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

Acne can present in many different forms, including ongoing acne lesions as well as marks from recent or previous acne lesions.

For active acne, they can present with:

  1. Non-inflammed lesions such as open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads)

  2. Inflammed lesions such as

    (A) Papules (small, painful red bumps)

    (B) Pustules (white or yellow "squeezable" spots)

    (C) Nodules (larger painful red bumps)

    (D) Cysts (swellings which have a fluid filled centre)

After the acne settles, they may leave marks such as

(A) Erythematous macules (red marks from recently healed spots)

(B) Pigmented macules (dark marks from old spots)

(C) Scars eg. ice pick, rolling, boxcar scars

You should visit your doctor if your acne is bothersome for you. He/She can do a proper evaluation of your acne and propose treatment plans which are suitable to treating your acne.
