Pain or discomfort around the navel region may be associated with problems involving the small and large intestines. This is especially so if you experience bowel-related symptoms such as loose stools, flatulence or constipation.

However, making a diagnosis based solely on the location of discomfort can be very misleading. Problems arising from other internal organs such as the left kidney may present with left loin or lumbar discomfort too.

Do look out for urine colour change or sharp pain when urinating. Other suspicious signs include:

  • Fever
  • Blood in your stools (hematochezia)
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)

Such findings should prompt you to get an immediate appointment with your doctor.

In general, discomfort which is migratory and transient usually points towards a benign condition, while persistent and localised discomfort is more sinister. If your problem does not improve over time or getting worse, you should pay your family doctor a visit to get to the bottom of it.
