What is the best treatment for recurring acne (image)?

Doctor's Answer

Firstly, I would like to emphasise that in patients with recurrent acne it is important to take a detailed history of the problem.

I have come across cases whereby the patient had only self medicated with OTC products which did not improve their recurrent acne. In such cases a more conservative approach using topical agents like adapalene, retin A, benzyl peroxide and clindamycin can be considered first.

In those cases who have experienced treatment failures with topicals, oral medications in the form of isotretinion and antibiotics like doxycycline and minocycline can be considered.

For those who do not wish to be on oral medications, there is a micro needle RF device called Agnes RF. This is a effective treatment for recurrent acne , especially in those localised to a specific area like the chin, forehead or cheeks. The device works by delivering RF energy to destroy the pilo sebaceous glands which are overactive in secreting sebum thus causing the ducts and pores to be clogged up leading to acne.

Once the glands are destroyed the sebum dries up and the clogged pores are cleared leading to resolution of the acne. Lasers for active recurrent acne like the Dual Yellow laser, Long pulsed ND yag 1064nm in Laser Genesis and Clarity Laser 2 are also effective.

Hope this helps!
