Is Sculptra facial dermal filler effective for treating rolling scars?

Doctor's Answer

Rolling scars occur due to pulling down of the skin surface by fibrous scar tissue beneath. Such scars are best treated by releasing the underlying scar tissue either by subcision (manual release using an inserted needle) or by fractional energy devices such as fractional CO2 laser.

Dermal fillers are generally not the best treatment option for rolling or other types of depressed (atrophic) scars. If I really had to choose a dermal filler to elevate rolling scars, I would opine that hyalurononic acid would be a better choice as this substance may be injected just beneath the rolling scar to lift it temporarily.

However, such scars are often non-stretchable (non-distensible) and the final results may not be ideal. Sculptra, which has to be injected deep to avoid potential lumpy side-effects from superficial injections would not be the appropriate choice of dermal filler for rolling scars.

Hope this helps!
