There are a number of skin conditions that can present with scaly skin patches.
Common causes include:
- Fungal infection. Fungal infection occurs when the immune system of humans cannot prevent a fungus from taking over the infected area.
- Psoriasis. Psoriasis is a skin condition where skin cells are rapidly building up, causing the surface of the skin to become scaly.
- Lichen simplex chronicus. Lichen simplex chronicus occurs when the skin thickens due to scratching or rubbing of the skin continuously.
- Contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is when the skin comes into contact with a substance that the individual is allergic to, causing the skin to itch.
- Bowen's disease. Bowen's disease is an early form of skin cancer and presents itself as a red and scaly patch on the skin.
A detailed history and examination are helpful in making a proper diagnosis. Investigations like a fungal smear may be helpful in some cases.
Do see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper assessment of the rash if this is still persistent.
