What are potential complications if nose threads are performed after fillers?

Doctor's Answer

It is common to have both nose dermal fillers and nose thread lift procedure to be done concurrently. Both work well for nose reshaping but are used differently based on one's pre-existing nose condition and desired effect.

When I attend to my patients during their initial assessment, I will differentiate their desired nose reshaping effect amenable to dermal fillers and/or thread insertion. We will discuss the options of nose reshaping which include:

  • dermal fillers (HA vs Bio-stimulant)
  • PDO mono threads vs Cog threads
  • surgery
  • combination procedures utilising more than one of these options

It is important to understand each procedure's limitations based on individual pre-existing nose shape and desired effect.

In my personal practice, I have found that nose thread lift is a very good procedure to achieve a higher and straighter nose bridge, sharper nasal profile and a slimmer nose tip/nose base. Mechanics of these nose thread lift enables the doctor to sculpt and shape one's nose as these threads act as a scaffolding structure. In addition, the threads are thought to also boost the production of new fibrotic tissues connected to the pre-existing surrounding fibrotic tissues, causing the structure of the subcutaneous fibrous connective tissues to be denser and stronger.

Common risks of each procedure should be discussed.

Some risks of serious complications of fillers include:

  • Skin necrosis or blindness when fillers are injected into a blood vessel
  • Infection
  • Fillers migration or hydrophilic effect, causing the widening of nose shape

In view of the above, most doctors will prefer the safer procedure -- nose thread lift. However, nose thread lift is not risk-free, some of the risks involved:

  • Thread extrusion
  • Infection

Sometimes, I will use a minimal amount of dermal fillers to enhance the effect of nose thread lift and to correct or camouflage imperfections such as a dorsal hump. Speak to your doctor regarding your concerns and discuss options for your nose reshaping.
