What are safe and common treatments for suspected bites and stings by unidentified insects? (Photo)

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

From the photo, while you may indeed have insect bite reactions, other possibilities may include papular eczema.

For acute insect bite reactions, a topical steroid used over the short term is safe and will help reduce the itch quickly. Oral antihistamines will help as well. There is probably no need for oral or injection steroids. Prevention of future bites is important to minimize relapse of the condition.

For papular eczema, a mild cleanser and moisturizer used together with the topical steroid will help repair the skin barrier function and reduce the associated skin inflammation and itch.

Hope this helps!
