There are many different classification systems for gastritis but none has been unanimously accepted as the gold standard, unfortunately. Most digestive specialists will accept the more common distinction between acute and chronic gastritis since this classification also correlates well with the histological report in biopsies.

In general, treatment of chronic gastritis, regardless of the types, is quite similar. The initial step most of us will take is to exclude common reversible causes such as Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection or inflammation due to a class of pain killers known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). These are the 2 important causes of peptic ulcers and erosions. Eradicating Hp and avoiding NSAIDs will result in improvement of gastritis and healing of ulcers.

Adopting a regular meal time, adequate rest, and avoidance of stress are other measures which may help with stomach inflammation. There is no standard treatment for chronic gastritis resulting from autoimmune conditions besides looking out for associated nutrient deficiencies and certain malignancies.
