What are the side effects of using Tretinoin Topical on acne?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

Topical tretinoin is considered an important medication in the prevention and control of both comedonal as well as inflammatory acne. It’s benefits generally outweighs it's side-effects, which are usually minor.

Common side-effects include skin irritation, sun-sensitivity and mild aggravation of acne during initiation of treatment. Tretinoin is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Contrary to popular myth, tretinoin does not cause thinning and weakening of the skin. In fact, it helps build new collagen and is used as an effective anti-ageing creams as well.

Many of the common side-effects of tretinoin can be minimized by judicious use during the start of treatment , avoiding excessive sun exposure and the use of other harsh topicals.

Hope this helps!
