What are the tests available in Singapore to check for Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) if my family has a history of gastric cancer? How much do they cost?

Gastric cancer is mostly sporadic and related to environmental factors although approximately 5-10% are genetically linked. Common environmental factors associated with gastric cancer include

  • Helicobacter pylori infection
  • Smoking
  • Regular intake of preserved and salted foods
  • Obesity

If you are particularly concerned about HDGC, your best bet is a genetic mutation test. This is a specialised process involving genetic counselling and blood sample testing, possibly including or requiring a sample from the index case for a more definitive result. I suggest a visit to the following website for more information on the exact nature and cost of genetic testing: https://www.nccs.com.sg/patient-care/specialties-services/cancer-genetics-service

Please be informed that the preventive treatment of HDGC, if found to carry the defective gene, is surgical removal of the entire stomach before cancer develops. There is no standard recommendation regarding the best time for the surgery although some experts suggest around 30 years of age or at least 5 years earlier than the index case. So please consider carefully on the merits and what is at stake, including the psychological impact on you and your family before you embark on taking such a test.
