Gastric cancer is mostly sporadic and related to environmental factors although approximately 5-10% are genetically linked. Common environmental factors associated with gastric cancer include
- Helicobacter pylori infection
- Smoking
- Regular intake of preserved and salted foods
- Obesity

Please be informed that the preventive treatment of HDGC, if found to carry the defective gene, is surgical removal of the entire stomach before cancer develops. There is no standard recommendation regarding the best time for the surgery although some experts suggest around 30 years of age or at least 5 years earlier than the index case.
