SGPT, otherwise known as ALT is one of the serum enzymes use by doctors to assess and monitor liver health. When there is any condition resulting in inflammation or damage to the liver, the serum SGPT goes up. However, the relationship between the level of SGPT and the degree of liver damage may not be directly proportional.

This means that a high SGPT may not necessarily mean a more severe liver disease compared with a lower level. What it means is that you should get your doctor to find out the underlying reason for the SGPT elevation in order to better manage the actual problem.
