What health screenings are recommended for males 65 years old and above?

Doctor's Answer

For a 65-year-old healthy male with no previous medical issues or family history, I would recommend that he screens for the following conditions at a minimum. (Further tests may be recommended by your doctor if there is a personal or family history of certain chronic diseases)

  1. Hypertension

    • What test: Blood pressure measurement

    • Who should test: All individuals ≥ 18years old

    • How often to test: once every 2 years if blood pressure is <130/85, once a year if blood pressure is between 130-139/85-89

  2. Obesity

    • What test: Measure height and weight to calculate your body mass index (BMI)

    • Who should test: All individuals ≥ 18years old

    • How often to test: Every year

  3. Cholesterol

    • What test: Fasting blood test

    • Who should test: All individuals ≥ 40 years old, or earlier if there are risk factors for heart disease.

    • How often to test: If normal, to repeat screening every 3 years. (If assessed to be a high risk of heart disease, then repeat the test every year)

  4. Diabetes

    • What test: Fasting blood test

    • Who should test: All individuals ≥ 40 years old, or earlier if there are risk factors for diabetes

    • How often to test: If normal, to repeat screening every 3 years.

  5. Colorectal cancer

    • What test: Faecal immunochemical test (FIT - stool test) OR colonoscopy

    • Who should test: For average-risk individuals to start from 50 years old

    • How often to test: Every year for FIT OR every 5-10 years for colonoscopy
