Thanks for the question. Initial recovery from the surgery (e.g. healing of incision, reduction in swelling/bruises) takes about four to five weeks, while complete bone and nerve healing takes about nine to 12 months.
During recovery, here are a few important things to take note of:
- Bleeding: this may be observed in the mouth (operation site) or nose for up to two weeks, this should not be any cause of concern. However, if you find that the bleeding is excessive, do inform your oral surgeon know.
- Diet: liquid diet for first three weeks > non-chew food for the next three weeks > soft-chew diet for another two weeks > resume normal chewing food only after eight weeks from jaw surgery
- Exercise: avoid any vigorous activity for four to six weeks and have minimal activity in the first week
- Oral hygiene: it will be difficult to brush and open your mouth fully after the surgery, hence refrain from toothbrushing for one week after the surgery. Use the prescribed mouthwash to rinse instead. Start brushing gently one week later with a baby toothbrush (smaller head)
- Stuffy nose: refrain from blowing your nose for at least two weeks after the surgery. If required, use a saline nasal spray instead of placing anything in your nose to clean it
If there is anything you are unsure of during the recovery process, do contact your oral surgeon so that he/she can advise accordingly.
