What kind of drinks or food should not be taken with durian?

Doctor's Answer

Hope you are feeling better!

Durian has a high nutritional content in mainly carbohydrates and fibre. This also means it will cause the body temperature to rise. With that, it is then safe to conclude that foods that generally cause a rise in body temperature or produce heat should be avoided when taking durian.

Some common examples of these foods include beef, mutton, longan, cocoa, coffee, and alcohol.

This is because an excessive amount of heat producing food will upset the delicate body system, and may cause you to start exhibiting symptoms such as headache, nausea, diarrhea, and sore throat etc.

On the other end, as durian is heat producing, foods that are heat dispelling may be unsuitable as well. This is simply due to the confusion of the gut being exposed to two extreme characters.

Any upset of the digestive system might then lead to flatulence / acid reflux etc. Do take extra note if you are consuming a food that is known to be on either extreme end of heat producing or heat dispelling.

Milk has been linked to higher blood pressures when taken with durian (this could be the cause of your headache).

This is most probably due to the individual’s digestive ability. The list of incompatible foods will differ from person to person.

Hope this helps! Cheers.
