What kind of vitamin deficiency could possibly cause dry skin?

Doctor's Answer

Thanks for the question.

Dryness of the skin can be due to genetic reasons or can be acquired. External factors like dry environments and contact with irritants can worsen the dryness of the skin. If you have severe dryness of the skin on the back, you should take note if you are using any topical creams, washes or or medication that may be aggravating the skin dryness. Some products (eg containing glycolic acid) can be very harsh for the skin and these products should be avoided.

I would advise using gentle or soap free cleansers when bathing as this will minimize the irritation on the skin. Shower oils may be helpful too.

It is important to use moisturizers, at least 2 to 3 times a day, if the skin is very dry. Aircon environments and winter climates can be very drying for the skin and you should moisturize even more frequently.

If the dryness is persistent, you can consider seeing your doctor or dermatologist to get it properly assessed and evaluated. Sometimes, fungal infections or other conditions may cause scaling of the skin that can mimic skin dryness.
