Extra teeth are known as supernumeraries.
Supernumerary teeth can appear:
- The same as an adult tooth (supplemental)
- Conical
- Barrel-shaped (tuberculate)
Supernumeraries should be removed if:
- The supernumerary is affecting the eruption of a permanent tooth.
- There is a cyst/growth/tumour associated with the tooth.
- Orthodontic treatment is planned.
- Implant placement in the area is planned.
- Hygiene is not satisfactory or if the adjacent teeth are becoming decayed.
Supernumeraries can be monitored without treatment if:
- The permanent teeth have erupted satisfactorily.
- No orthodontic treatment is planned.
- The supernumerary is not associated with a cyst/growth/tumour.
- Removal of the supernumerary would damage the vitality of the adjacent teeth.
The decision to maintain or remove a supernumerary is very case-dependent and you should be guided by your dentist who is familiar with your oral condition and concerns.
