Extra teeth are known as supernumeraries.

Supernumerary teeth can appear:

1. The same as an adult tooth (supplemental)
2. Conical
3. Barrel-shaped (tuberculate)

Supernumeraries should be removed if:

1. The supernumerary is affecting the eruption of a permanent tooth.
2. There is a cyst/growth/tumour associated with the tooth.
3. Orthodontic treatment is planned.
4. Implant placement in the area is planned.
5. Hygiene is not satisfactory or if the adjacent teeth are becoming decayed.

Supernumeraries can be monitored without treatment if:

1. The permanent teeth have erupted satisfactorily.
2. No orthodontic treatment is planned.
3. The supernumerary is not associated with a cyst/growth/tumour.
4. Removal of the supernumerary would damage the vitality of the adjacent teeth.

The decision to maintain or remove a supernumerary is very case-dependent and you should be guided by your dentist who is familiar with your oral condition and concerns.
