Why are eyedrops important after LASIK?

Doctor's Answer

LASIK, like any other operation, requires a healing response to the surgical effects for full recovery. This may include an inflammatory reaction. Besides this, as there is a disturbance to the surface of the eye, there is a small risk of infection.

As such, it is routine practice to prescribe eyedrops like steroid drops (to control inflammation) and antibiotic drops after LASIK. Usually, these medicated drops are only used for about 1 week after LASIK as recovery is typically very quick.

After LASIK, eyes often feel drier for a variable period of a few weeks to a few months, although in some patients this can go on for a longer period of time. As such, LASIK patients are also asked to use artificial tears after surgery, for comfort as well as to maintain good vision.
