Why are UV rays from the sun harmful after laser treatment?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

When treating Asian skin with lasers, one of the most common and distressing side-effect is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The occurrence of PIH post-laser is made more frequent, intense and prolonged after UV exposure as UV stimulates melanocytes to produce more melanin.

Hence to get optimal outcome and to reduce PIH after laser treatment, it is prudent to avoid significant UV exposure and use regular sunscreens up to 3 months after laser treatment.

Hope this helps!
