Why do I get persistent green or yellowish nasal discharge?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for your question. If you have been having yellow or green nasal discharge that goes away with antibiotics but recurs many times over the last 6 months, you may be suffering from recurrent sinusitis (recurring sinus infections).

I would strongly suggest a visit to an ENT Specialist for an assessment. Your ENT Specialist will take a thorough clinical history and perform a complete head & neck examination, including a nasoendoscopy (relatively painless scope through the nose under local anaesthesia).

If you do have recurrent sinus infection, adequate control of predisposing risk factors will be essential. This would include good control of your allergic rhinitis and addressing any anatomical risk factors of your nose and sinuses (e.g. complex sinus cells/anatomy, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum etc). A CT scan (special type of X-rays) of your sinuses may be required to assess your anatomical risk factors and to determine if you have chronic sinusitis (sinus infection lasting longer than 3 months).

Keeping your immunity up with good lifestyle habits (e.g eating healthy, adequate excercise, good hydration etc), adequate rest and a good mental health may help reduce the chances of you getting frequent infections.

Hope this helps and all the best!
