Are there any creams or oral medications that are effective for dark eye circles?

Doctor's Answer

Medical grade eye creams containing a combination of retinol, vitamin A and C, peptides, ceramides and hyaluronic acid, can help to stimulate collagen formation to reduce the appearance of dark eye circles caused by thin skin under the eyes.

In patients with medical conditions such as sinusitis and allergy that result in congestion of blood vessels and fluid retention below the eyes, oral anti-histamines taken at a low dose short treatment course can be prescribed to help address these conditions, reducing the appearance of dark eye circles caused by vascular changes. Certain oral anti-histamines can cause drowsiness. They are otherwise generally safe.

However, the above treatment modalities may not yield as significant results and I would advice using a combination of other treatments such as undereye fillers and skin tightening devices; depending on causative factors of dark eye circles.

I would advice seeking a consultation with a doctor with a keen interest in treating dark eye circles to determine the cause(s), therefore tailoring a customised treatment approach for most optimum results.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Dr David Deng
