Can dentures be used to replace a single missing tooth?

Doctor's Answer

Hi Elaine

There are many solutions to replacing a single front tooth and the decision one may make would depend on several factors, like costs and condition of the adjacent teeth, etc

Dentures are one of the most economical way of replacing a single front tooth in the short term. However, dentures are generally more uncomfortable as it involves a plastic/metal base that fits over the gum. This would undoubtedly affect your speech and chewing ability. Dentures would also be required to be replaced after a few years, as its fit would be compromised as the supporting bone resorbs with time.

Some other replacement options would be bridges or Implants.

Dental Bridges are used to replace missing teeth permanently. It is made up of 2 or more dental crowns on adjacent teeth (known as abutments). The part, which replaces a missing tooth is called as a “pontic”.They are much more aesthetic pleasing and more comfortable than removable dentures. There are different type of bridges like conventional bridges and maryland bridges. They help to maintain face shape, prevent teeth from drifting, restore chewing, speaking ability and your smile, without the discomfort of dentures.

Dental Implants are small titanium screws placed in bone to replace the root of a missing tooth. It is another permanent option to restore appearance, function, speech and eliminate all the discomforts associated with wearing dentures.

Unlike dental bridges, dental implants do not involve trimming the neighbouring teeth.

With both the dental bridges and dental implants, do note that they are fixed options, hence it is important that the arrangement and color of your teeth are also taken into consideration when making a decision.

All these are some of the possible options of replacing a single missing tooth, and I would advise you consult your dentist for the most appropriate treatment options for your situation. Hope this helps!
