Does laser treatments cause the skin to be weak and thin?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

There are many different lasers around, each meant for different purpose. Most cosmetic lasers used to treat common cosmetic concerns are safe and do not cause skin thinning and weakness if operated by qualified trained doctors and used for its intended purpose at the right settings.

In fact, some lasers e.g. fractional CO2 help build new collagen to improve weakened and thinned skin.

The most common causes for weakened thinned skin are due to:

  1. Ageing
  2. UV exposure
  3. Smoking
  4. Poor nutrition
  5. Underlying medical illness e.g. chronic renal disease
  6. Inappropriate use of topical steroid creams.

Hope this helps!

What is the best laser treatment to remove syringomas? (photo)

The best laser is CO2 laser. Don't bother with electrocautery for deep issues like syringoma as the damage is less precise and therefore more collateral damage. Superficial lumps like skin tags on the other hand can easily be done by both electrocautery and CO2 laser without any scarring as well. Your photo may actually be sebaceous hyperplasia, instead of syringoma but this is more for academic purpose as the photo is quite blur. But the gold standard is still CO2 laser.

Why have chemical peels not been effective for my hyperpigmentation?

Sorry to hear you are struggling with troublesome post inflammatory hyperpigmentation which often appears as brown marks on the skin after an initial injury/pimple/inflammation on the skin. It is very common in Asians due to the higher melanin content in our skin. which gets released after any inflammation to the area. How long it takes to fade can depend on what caused it in the first place, and the location of the pigmentation. The face will often fade faster than the body, which will fade faster than your legs. Your treatment options are: 1.
