How can I get rid of acne on my arms?Acne & Scars
Hi, I have acne on my upper arms and back for the last 3 years. Sometimes, there is also itching.
Thank you for your question. Firstly, I think it is important to confirm the diagnosis of acne as there are other conditions that can appear on the arms and back which can mimic acne such as keratosis pilaris and pityrosporom folliculitis. The management would be dependent on the diagnosis.
If it is indeeed acne, topical treatments like tretinoin cream and topical clindamycin may be helpful. Oral antibiotics and isotretinoin can be considered in more stubborn cases.
I would suggest you see your doctor/dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis so that the most appropriate treatment can be given.
Thanks for your question. Your concern is not uncommon. I agree with Dr Theng that it is essential to exclude other skin pathologies that may present similar to acne such as keratosis pilaris (build up of keratin that might be associated with eczema) and pityrosporom folliculitis (yeast/ fungal infection). Treatment is therefore different from acne vulgaris caused by propionibacterium acnes (bacteria).
Treatment of acne involves firstly understanding your current skin care regime and suggesting changes if necessary, followed by treating the acne proper with topical creams vs oral medications - antibiotics and vitamin A, depending on severity.
