How do I know if a mole is cancerous and what are the removal options and cost? (Photo)

Doctor's Answer

Mole cancer, also known as melanoma, is the most dangerous form of skin cancer as it has a tendency to spread and metastasize. Early detection is the key as early diagnosis of melanoma leads to a much more favourable diagnosis and it is curable if detected early.

The signs to look out for in a suspicious mole includes:

  1. Asymmetry - the mole is irregular and not symmetrical
  2. Border - the border is irregular or the mole is bleeding
  3. Colour - the mole has varying shades of colour.
  4. Diameter - the mole is larger than 6mm
  5. Evolution - the mole is growing rapidly

If the above signs are present, you should get the mole checked by your doctor or dermatologist. If there is any suspicion of an abnormal mole or melanoma, a biopsy will be done to confirm the diagnosis.

The cost of removal of the mole depends on the method of removal, size of the mole and expertise of the doctor. Moles can be removed by shave excision or surgical excision. Laser removal can be performed for small, flat moles which are benign. You can speak to your doctor about the different options for mole removal and the costs involved.
