Studies on IPL and Q-switch laser for treatment of solar lentigo on the face have been done. Both IPL and Q-switch laser has been found to effectively treat solar lentigo, although they work by slightly different mechanisms. (Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2011).
IPL removes accumulated melanin from the epidermis (top layer of the skin) and reduces the contrast between epidermal lesions and normal tissue, but does not destroy melanosomes (pigment-containing “package” in our cells). It has been suggested though, that larger patches of solar lentigo showed lack of response to IPL treatment alone (Aesthetics Journal, Sep 2015).
In conclusion, as a guide, both modalities may be used, as long as they are used under the correct indications and at the right settings by an experienced provider, but optimum treatment option and results must be individualized based on your condition.
