Which treatments can treat both dark eye circle and hyperpigmentation?

Doctor's Answer

First, we would have to determine the cause of dark eye circles. Many are multifactorial which include:

  • genetics,
  • allergy rhinitis/sinusitis,
  • hyperpigmentation,
  • loss of volume due to fat loss or bone demineralization,
  • loss of elasticity causing loose skin under the eyes
  • etc.

A thorough medical history and skin assessment are an extremely important factor to achieve a desirable result for dark eye circles. Patient with allergy rhinitis/sinusitis will need to be treated medically with antihistamine and sometimes referral to an ENT specialist.

Aesthetically, treatment for dark eye circles are usually a combination approach. In my practice, I tackle hyperpigmentation under the eyes with topical lightening cream/serum and lasers treatment such as:

  • picosecond laser and
  • pro yellow laser.

Depending on the type of pigmentations, different laser platforms will be utilized to treat various forms of hyperpigmentation. If vascular component needed to be treated, I will utilize vascular long pulsed yag laser for dark eye circles treatment as well.

In many cases, dermal HA fillers play an important role to treat underlying dark eye circles with a certain degree of ‘tear trough deformity’ or pseudo eyebags with area of hollowness and laxed skin. I often utilize “hard” dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft to restore mid cheek volume loss. I will then complete with “soft” dermal fillers such as Juvederm Volbella and Teosyal Redensity II as they are perfect for filling in hollowness in the tear trough under eye region. Teosysal Redensity II will be my top option as it’s a unique 3-in-1 formula containing:

  • amino acids,
  • antioxidants,
  • minerals and
  • vitamins.

These are necessary for restructuring and cell generation. It is a great product to fill the area around the eyes, dissipating the shadows that cause dark eye circles.

Last but not least, daily skincare maintenances are equally important to tackle dark eye circles. Hydrators, moisturizers and adequate sunscreen (SPF 30 and above) are important steps that one often overlooked especially pertaining to their undereye care.
