Is it safe to use sunscreen and moisturiser with alcohol ingredients after laser skin resurfacing?

Doctor's Answer

Hi thanks for your question.

It is important that you keep your skin well hydrated and moisturised after
a face laser skin resurfacing. Any use of products with alcohol will dry
the skin further and affect the results of the healing process.

Here are some tips for you to take note after your laser treatment :

1. Any excessive sun exposure may cause hyperpigmentation and irritation.
Do stay out of the direct rays of the sun.

2. Use a UVA UVB sunscreen of at least SPF 30 or more even if you will be
in the shade. Use a hat, umbrella and UV protected sunglasses if you must
be out in the sun.

3. Do not pick at your open wounds. You need to treat your skin delicately
– do not pick or exfoliate your skin until your skin heals.

4. Avoid the use of any products containing alcohol, AHA, BHA, reitnoids or any other products that are stimulating and causes dryness to the skin.

5. The use of products with growth factors will help with skin repair and
regeneration which is important after a laser treatment.

6. Use proper hygiene. Cover your pillow with a fresh clean pillowcase.
Wash your face with a mild cleanser and water twice a day. Be sure to wash
your hands thoroughly prior to washing your face. Keep your face away from
potential bacteria producing items like your cell phone, pillowcase, or
sunglasses.

7. Try not to use any makeup until your skin has completely healed.

8. Do not exercise, use a sauna, Jacuzzi, or any other activity that will
heat up your body’s temperature. You need to allow your skin to stay cool
to minimise any discomfort or stinging sensations.
I hope some of these tips will help you to achieve the best results from
your laser treatment . If you have any further questions or doubts, you
should contact your doctor from the clinic that you did the procedure with
. Have a good day!

Yours sincerely,

Dr Vivian Yong
