May Minocycline treatment be a safer option than other topical antibiotics for treating acne?

Doctor's Answer

Minocycline is an oral antibiotic that is used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. While minocycline is an effective treatment for acne, it can cause various side effects including dizziness, headaches, tiredness, nausea and diarrhoea. Less common but more serious side effects include skin pigmentation, skin rashes and allergy and liver toxicity.

In general, topical treatments are a safer option that oral minocycline as they do not have systemic side effects, However, in cases where the acne is not sufficiently well controlled on topical treatment, oral antibiotics such as doxycycline or minocycline or oral isotretinoin can be used. While systemic treatments have their own set of side effects, they are safe when used appropriately with proper guidance and advice from the doctor.
