What could cause staining after braces removal? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

Sometimes after braces removal, patients may notice that their tooth surfaces look slightly different. These discolorations are usually either a result of residual cement left on the tooth after braces removal or decalcification/decay.

As the cement used to attach the braces on the tooth are generally tooth-coloured, sometimes orthodontist/ dentist may left behind some residues of the cement despite their best effort to remove them immediately after braces removal.

Overtime, these cement will present in a more yellowish colour as it start to pick up some stains from food. These residual cement can be easily polished off by your orthodontist using dental tools during a subsequent review visit.

However, sometimes these staining could be a result of insufficient oral hygiene during the braces treatment. During the cause of orthodontic treatment, sometimes there may be plaque or food particles trap around the brackets (the little pieces attached to each tooth).

Overtime, if these are not removed daily, it will result to decalcification, which is an early stage of decay. The tooth will appear as a white patch, usually around where the brackets are attached or along the gum line.

If decalcification progress, it will turn brown/black and develop a cavity, which will need to have the decay removed and repaired with a filling. Judging from your photos provided, your tooth showed sign of decalcification and small decay have developed.

I would suggest that you visit a dentist for assessment and to do the necessary treatment if needed to prevent the problem from worsening.
