What is the best laser vision correction treatment for big pupils?

Doctor's Answers 2

Key to treating someone with a certain pupil size is to ensure the laser treatment zone chosen is sufficient to accommodate that size of pupil. Whether one does it via LASIK, PRK and ReLEx SMILE would be based on other factors like corneal shape and corneal thickness. Main thing to understand is that don’t be too caught up about whether there is one” best”. It’s important for your surgeon to customise the treatment choice to your specific case and that way maximise your chances of a good result.

Therefore, look to surgeons who are experienced in not just one type of refractive surgery. Ensure they are comfortable to discuss all the types of refractive surgical options with you including LASIK, PRK, ReLEx SMILE and Implantable Contact Lens etc.

Wishing you all the success with your journey towards gaining spectacles independence.

Thanks for your question! It's difficult to comment specifically in view of the lack of details about your particular measurements, for example how large are your "large pupils". The majority of patients are actually suitable for routine VLC as modern machines have a large effective optical zone of 6-6.5mm.

All things being equal, you can consider an implantable collamer lens, laser refractive surgery with a larger ablation zone (femto-Lasik, with larger flap diameter, or surface ablation epi-Lasik), routine femto-Lasik, SMILE).

You should discuss your specific concerns and options with your ophthalmologist though. Best of luck with your surgery!

Can I do TransPRK if I have dry eyes due to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Yes you are right that meibomian gland disease (MGD) is a major cause of dry eyes. If you do have a combination of MGD and dry eyes, there are many ways to treat them! However, since you mentioned that your eyes are neither dry nor painful without contact lens use, I suspect you may have another condition known as Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC). It is very common for chronic contact lens over-wearers to develop GPC. It is your body’s response or ‘rejection’ to the chronic use of contact lenses, which is regarded as a ‘foreign’ material to your eye.
