What is the difference between dermal fillers and hyaluronic acid fillers?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

Dermal fillers refer to a variety of substances that can be injected into the skin for filling in creases and lines, enhancing facial contours and plumping up the lips and cheeks. The term "Dermal" actually refers to the dermis layer of the skin and is the layer which fillers are most appropriately injected into. However dept of injection is dependent on filler type and anatomical location of injection.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers refers to fillers made of hyaluronic acid (Juvederm, Restylane). HA is a naturally occurring substance in the skin . It has the ability to draw and retain large amounts of water, allowing it to restore lost volume and hydrate the skin.

Not all fillers are made of HA. Other substances used to make fillers include calcium hydroxyapatite(Radiesse) and polycaprolactone (Ellanse) . Each filler has its own indications of use and safety profile. Choice of filler for use also depends on physician preference and familiarity with the product. It is best to discuss with your treating aesthetic physician regarding which filler is best for you.
